Matthew Prater
Matthew Prater is a non-binary multi-disciplinary artist and writer, working in the combinations of traditional and expanded media. They survey global topics such as the joint-pollution of a human macroorganism, cultural iconographic ideas of a second “promised land”, and the body as a physical matrix operating in a perceptual world. While such issues tend to be viewed through the singular lens of whatever present group is considering them, Prater layers moments from multiple perspectives throughout history to give new global context to multi-faceted topics. Prater’s work has been shown in Third Space Gallery at the University of Houston, The Walker’s Gallery of San Marcos, and TXST Galleries at Texas State University. Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and later moving to Texas, Prater is currently finishing a Studio Art BFA at Texas State University’s Sculpture program.

Title: Rigid body
Description:
A 3D model produced utilising photogrammetry. The scan represents my personal desktop, and considers the newfound primacy of the digital persona in an age of distance and self-personification by looking back on the real physical space in which this is achieved. With in-person engagement becoming increasingly inundated with the hypersociality of online platforms, the desktop serves to be the new physical mediatory space between the physical and mental realms. This new relationship gives way for amplifying the negotiation of identity towards this new immateriality within the matrix of the physical space of a workstation. By translating the unreal, and real, components of our selfs, we may begin to consider the utility, through which this is accomplished, extensions of the self, and equally subject to self-identification as is the body or the mind.
